Short-term rentals (ex. Airbnb or Vrbo) are becoming a popular source of income for many, however, did you know that depending on your jurisdiction there are rules and regulations for this business? For host who operate short-term rentals in Washington, DC, this is regulated under the Short-Term Rental Regulations Act of 2018.
Under this act there are two types of licenses:
Short-Term License – host must present on property; there is no limit on number of stays within a calendar year; all short-term rentals are limited to 30 days or less consecutive nights.
Short-Term Rental: Vacation Rental License – host does not have to be present; vacation rentals can’t exceed 90 days within a calendar year; each rental is limited to 30 days or less consecutive nights.
The fee to obtain a two-year short-term rental license is $104.50, and DC has extended the application grace period to June 9, 2022
For host who don’t comply with DC’s short-term rental requirements, there can be fines up to $250 for the 1st violation and increasing up to $1000 for additional violations.
